Comprendre la difficulté à post-éditer
De la "fluency" à l’énoncéité du texte littéraire

This article examines the quality of LLM‑generated pre‑translations in comparison with the quality standards expected for literary translation. What is the level of quality that the NMT post‑editor has to deal with when faced with a pre‑translation whose fluency (Castilho et al., 2018) is foregrounded in the NLP literature? It appears that the fluency defined for these NMT pre‑translations is not compatible with the “énoncéité” (Milner, 1992) or utterance-like quality expected of a literary translation. Drawing on French translations and pre‑translations of the incipit of Wuthering Heights, the article shows that the post‑editor is confronted with pre‑translations that, although good enough to be meaningful, still require sharp critical reasoning.
